Today we did snack and morning check ins and then I did my lesson on static electricity. Today I had an activity planned to demonstrate static electricity using balloons and cheerios. My lesson changed a little bit and I added some definitions and I also changed the order in which my lesson was taught. I originally wanted to review and do the instructional part of my lesson first, but after gauging the students I decided to do the activity first and I am so glad I did. I think that once I demonstrated static electricity, it made a lot more sense to the students.
Although the activity went well, I wish I would've brought in some velvet for students to rub their balloons on rather than on their hair. After doing the activity, they were better able to relate the concepts to the activity which deepened their understanding.
After my lesson, Carina and I had the opportunity to go into the grade one class to do some literacy work in stations. I got to read with a group and have them read short stories to me. I was surprised by how well they did for being so young! It is crazy how much and how quick kids can learn. We also had another teacher come in to talk about stories and how they connect to our Indigenous peoples... "Grandmother's Stories". They then read a story and got to write their own at the end of the lesson.
